Humanity Has a Remarkable Capacity to Help
Giving is a global phenomenon.
The CAF World Giving Index 2024 found that around 4.3 billion people worldwide had helped a stranger, donated money or volunteered their time during the period measured by the study. The research covered 142 countries.
The finding is remarkable because generosity exists across very different cultures, economies and communities.
People may express it differently. In some places, volunteering is common. In others, people frequently donate directly to individuals or support charitable organisations. In many communities, helping strangers is simply part of everyday social life.
The scale of global participation shows that philanthropy is not exclusively the responsibility of wealthy individuals or large organisations.
Millions of ordinary people contribute in small ways.
A few hours of volunteering, a contribution to a community initiative, helping someone during a difficult period or supporting a charitable cause can all become part of a larger culture of giving.
Global challenges may be enormous, but so is humanity’s capacity for cooperation.
The story of philanthropy is ultimately a story about people choosing to care about one another.
